Right to Information Act, 2005
The Right to Information Act, 2005 (RTI Act, 2005) is a law introduced in India to ensure transparency and accountability in the functioning of government institutions. Under this Act, every Indian citizen has the right to request information available with government offices and receive it within the prescribed time limit.
Under this Act, citizens can request documents, orders, reports, details of schemes, expenditure details, and other information from public authorities such as Grama Panchayats, Block Panchayats, District Panchayats, Government Departments, and Public Sector Undertakings.
Upon receiving an RTI application, the Public Information Officer (PIO) is generally required to provide the requested information within 30 days. If the applicant is not satisfied with the response received, they may approach the Appellate Authority.
