A Panchayat is a collective body of elected representatives responsible for administering the affairs of Panchayat Raj institutions. In the context of a Grama Panchayat, it is the primary committee that implements the decisions of the Grama Sabha and manages day-to-day administration.The main components of a Panchayat are:President: The head of the Panchayat. They preside over meetings and oversee the overall activities of the Panchayat.Vice President: Performs the duties of the President in their absence.Ward Members: Elected representatives from each ward within the Panchayat.Standing Committees: Sub-committees formed to facilitate easier decision-making in specific areas such as Finance, Development, Welfare, Health, and Education.

History of Grama Panchayat

Mutholy is the historical birthplace of the ancient rulers known as the Meenachil Karthas. Its name is traditionally interpreted to mean an area with pearl-like olive trees, a source where pearls were found, or a well where pearls originated. The region came to be known as Meenachil after its first king, Sri Veera Damodara Simharu, constructed a temple dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi. In early times, the Meenachil River—then known as the Kavanar—served as the primary highway for water transport, carrying spices and black pepper to Alappuzha in cargo boats and fostering rich trade relations with foreigners and North Indians.
